An Ethiopian court official, in charge of the entire treasury under the Candace, has traveled to Jerusalem to worship and is riding home in his chariot reading aloud from the prophet Isaiah. An angel of the Lord tells Philip to go south on the desert road, without explaining why, and the Spirit then tells him specifically to go up and stay near this particular chariot.

Philip runs up alongside it and asks the official a simple question: does he understand what he is reading?

He Had Traveled Far for Worship That Still Left Him With Questions

The official’s journey to Jerusalem, likely well over a thousand miles round trip, shows real devotion, but arriving in the right place and reading the right scroll had not, on their own, produced understanding. He is reading Isaiah’s words about a lamb led to slaughter and genuinely does not know who the prophet is describing.

He Admitted He Needed Help Instead of Pretending Otherwise

“‘How can I,’ he said, ‘unless someone explains it to me?’ So he invited Philip to come up and sit with him.” A man of his rank and education could easily have brushed off a stranger running alongside his chariot. Instead, he names his confusion plainly and makes room in his own chariot for someone to help him with it.

Philip Started Exactly Where the Man Already Was

“Then Philip began with that very passage of Scripture and told him the good news about Jesus.” Philip does not redirect him to a different starting point or make him begin somewhere more familiar. He takes the specific verse the man was already stuck on and explains the gospel from there.

He Asked to Be Baptized the Moment He Saw Water

“As they traveled along the road, they came to some water and the eunuch said, ‘Look, here is water. What can stand in the way of my being baptized?'” There is no waiting period, no additional instruction requested. As soon as the opportunity is physically present, he asks for it, and goes on his way rejoicing afterward.

“‘How can I,’ he said, ‘unless someone explains it to me?’ So he invited Philip to come up and sit with him.”
Acts 8:31

He had traveled a long way to worship and still didn’t understand what he was reading. A stranger sat down beside him in a chariot on a desert road, and that was enough.
