A woman has been bleeding for twelve years, a condition that under Jewish law made her ritually unclean and anyone she touched unclean as well, effectively cutting her off from normal participation in her own community. Mark notes she had spent all she had on physicians and only grown worse. When she hears Jesus is nearby, she does not approach him directly. She works her way through the crowd toward his robe.
She only means to touch the edge of it.
Her Condition Had Already Cost Her Everything
“She had suffered a great deal under the care of many doctors and had spent all she had, yet instead of getting better she grew worse.” Twelve years of treatment had left her both physically worse and financially ruined, a detail that explains why this moment in the crowd may have been close to her last remaining option.
She Chose the Crowd Instead of a Direct Request
Given her ritual uncleanness, openly approaching Jesus and asking to be touched would have meant publicly identifying her condition to a crowd that could have turned on her for making them unclean by association. Reaching for the edge of his robe unnoticed was the version of asking that her circumstances still allowed her to make.
Jesus Noticed What the Crowd Did Not
“At once Jesus realized that power had gone out from him. He turned around in the crowd and asked, ‘Who touched my clothes?'” With people pressing in on every side, the disciples find the question almost absurd. But Jesus distinguishes between the crowd’s incidental contact and her deliberate reach, and stops to find her specifically.
He Made Her Say It Out Loud, Then Called Her Daughter
“Then the woman, knowing what had happened to her, came and fell at his feet and, trembling with fear, told him the whole truth.” Jesus does not let the healing stay anonymous. He waits until she comes forward and speaks, and only then answers her, calling her “daughter” and telling her that her faith, not merely the touch, had made her well.
“She had heard about Jesus and came up behind him in the crowd and touched his cloak, because she thought, ‘If I just touch his clothes, I will be healed.'”
Mark 5:27-28
She reached for the smallest, quietest contact she thought she was allowed. Jesus stopped the whole crowd to make sure she was seen doing it.
