Gabriel is sent by God to Nazareth, an unremarkable town, to a virgin engaged to a man named Joseph, a detail Luke records plainly without further explanation of why this particular young woman was chosen. The angel’s greeting alone, “Greatly favoured one, the Lord is with you,” troubles her before he has even delivered the actual message.

What follows is one of the largest announcements in Scripture, given to someone with no status, no public record, and likely still in her teens.

She Was Troubled by the Greeting Before the News Arrived

“Mary was greatly troubled at his words and wondered what kind of greeting this might be.” Her first reaction is not to the announcement of a miraculous pregnancy, which has not been mentioned yet. It is to the strangeness of being addressed this way at all, by a being she had no reason to expect.

Her Question Was Practical, Not Skeptical

“How will this be, since I am a virgin?” Unlike Zechariah’s earlier response to a similar angelic announcement, which drew a rebuke and months of silence, Mary’s question does not question whether the promise is true. It asks how something biologically impossible will actually happen, and Gabriel answers her directly rather than correcting her for asking.

She Was Given a Sign She Had Not Asked For

“Even Elizabeth your relative is going to have a child in her old age… nothing is impossible with God.” Gabriel offers evidence unprompted, pointing to what is already happening in Mary’s own extended family as proof that the announcement he has just made is not beyond what God is already doing elsewhere.

Her Answer Came Before She Had Any of the Details Worked Out

“I am the Lord’s servant. May your word to me be fulfilled.” Mary agrees before she knows how Joseph will respond, what the town will assume about her, or what the practical consequences of an unexplained pregnancy will cost her socially. The consent is given in full, ahead of any of that being resolved.

“‘I am the Lord’s servant,’ Mary answered. ‘May your word to me be fulfilled.’ Then the angel left her.”
Luke 1:38

She was young, engaged, and without any of the details worked out yet. She said yes before a single one of them was settled.
